Sharing the Community with Nature

One of the things that makes Nocatee so unique is that nature isn't something you have to drive to—it's part of everyday life.

With more than 60% of the community permanently preserved as natural habitat, it's common to see wildlife while walking the Greenway Trails, relaxing in your backyard, or simply driving through the neighborhood.

Some mornings you may spot deer grazing near the preserves. Other days you might see a bald eagle soaring overhead or an osprey diving into a lake after a fish.

Living in Nocatee means living alongside nature, and for many residents, that's one of the community's greatest attractions.

Birds You'll See Throughout Nocatee

Birdwatchers quickly discover that Nocatee is home to an incredible variety of species.

Some of the most common include:

  • Bald Eagles

  • Ospreys

  • Great Blue Herons

  • Great Egrets

  • Sandhill Cranes

  • Barred Owls

  • Red-shouldered Hawks

  • Wood Storks

  • Anhingas

One of our favorite sights is watching an osprey circle above one of Nocatee's many lakes before diving into the water to catch a fish.

Sandhill cranes have become local celebrities, confidently strolling through neighborhoods and golf cart paths as if they own the place.

Mammals That Call Nocatee Home

Although they're often seen during early mornings or around sunset, several mammals regularly make appearances throughout the community.

You may encounter:

  • White-tailed Deer

  • River Otters

  • Rabbits

  • Raccoons

  • Armadillos

Occasionally, residents also capture photos of bobcats or coyotes traveling through preserve areas.

These sightings are much less common but serve as a reminder that Nocatee was thoughtfully designed around Florida's natural environment.

Reptiles and Other Wildlife

Living in Florida also means sharing the landscape with reptiles.

Common sightings include:

  • Gopher Tortoises

  • Box Turtles

  • Pond Turtles

  • Alligators

  • Native snakes

One rule longtime Floridians live by is simple:

If there's water, assume there's an alligator nearby.

Alligator sightings are a normal part of life throughout Florida. The good news is that problems are rare when wildlife is respected and admired from a safe distance.

Many residents also enjoy spotting protected gopher tortoises, which play an important role in Florida's ecosystem.

Where to See Wildlife

Some of the best places to enjoy wildlife include:

  • Greenway Trails

  • Settler's Pond

  • Community lakes

  • Preserve areas

  • The Nocatee Kayak Launch

  • Your own backyard

One of the things we love most is that every walk can be a little different depending on the season and time of day.

Living on a Preserve Lot

Many buyers specifically search for preserve lots because they offer beautiful natural views and additional privacy.

Living next to conservation land does come with a few extra considerations.

Wildlife is simply part of everyday life.

It's common to see deer browsing near landscaping or hear owls calling after sunset.

Coyotes occasionally travel through preserve corridors, which is why we always recommend supervising small pets outdoors.

Many homeowners with small dogs choose to install a low mesh barrier along the bottom of their aluminum fencing. This inexpensive addition helps prevent curious pets from slipping underneath while preserving the open views that make preserve lots so desirable.

Another common sight around Nocatee is decorative garden pinwheels or wind spinners. Many residents use them to discourage deer from browsing flower beds while adding a little color to their landscaping.

Respecting Wildlife

One of the reasons wildlife thrives in Nocatee is because residents generally respect the natural environment.

A few simple reminders go a long way:

  • Never feed wildlife.

  • Keep a safe distance from alligators.

  • Keep dogs leashed outside designated dog parks.

  • Supervise small pets near preserve areas and ponds.

  • Leave protected species, including gopher tortoises, undisturbed.

These simple habits help keep both wildlife and residents safe.
